It is a mixture of combined substances, aggregates – either gravel or crushed stones then bitumen is added (this is derived from crude oil). Tar & Chip Surfacing.
Tar and chip, sometimes known as chip seal is a surfacing technique, it is known to be cost effective and is a frequently used technique for roads, driveways and carparks. The installation is achieved by applying a layer of hot liquid asphalt (tar) onto a pre-prepared surface and then immediately covered with a layer of aggregate chips. The latter adhere to the sticky tar. This creates a surface that is durable and its rough texture which is also skid resistant.
This technique ensures a surface which is resilient, provides excellent traction, prevents water accumulation and withstands heavy traffic.
